The Best Way to capture traffic without using a span port !!
A tool that you should have !
A Tool that you can't
live without !
This is a minimally invasive way to capture the traffic between a device and the network. No switch configuration changes to make or to remove when it is no longer needed. No worrying about overloading the backplane on a switch while capturing information needed to resolve a problem.
Travelling as light as possible is always better. You can put this in your briefcase or backpack.
No Bulky Power Supplies
You can use the USB port on a PC or a cell phone USB charger as a power source.
With other low cost ethernet taps, you usually have to use two different captures to see the entire network conversation you are watching . To get this at one time, you either need to have two ethernet ports on your laptop and then combine the capture files to see a composite view of the traffic or put a hub in between the two monitor ports of the tap and your capture laptop.
Easier than configuring a SPAN Port
Using a tap allows you to avoid possible switch misconfiguration from causing problems on the network or the switch.
Best way to protect your capture pc from being discovered
The mac address of the pc running Wireshark or your data capture software is not visibile on the network.
See all of the traffic on the connection you are watching
Some switches dont show you all of the traffic on the port you are spanning. This may prevent you from seeing a problem especially when sniffing a trunk or encapsulated port.
"Works great with Wireshark! Was able to diagnos some issues without interfering with the connection."
"This might not have the same capability as a full sized managed switch or network analyzer that costs thousands of dollars, but for its size, price, and convenience it's incredibly useful and has certainly earned a spot in my bag of tricks."
