Lab Gear – Simulating WAN Connection speeds and conditions

I am in the process of upgrading and building out my lab for an eBook that I am working on that should be out later this year. One of the challenges I have run into is how to properly be able to simulate WAN speeds and problems. One of the devices that came up on my radar was the simulators from the folks at Apposite Technologies. A press announcement came out recently where Riverbed has adopted the use of the Linktropy Mini2.

I am waiting to hear back from Apposite to see if I can borrow on to run through its paces for a few weeks. There are several open source alternatives for WAN speed simulation that I am looking at as well. I will post more on this as I make progress in this area. Although this type of solution is positioned from the standpoint of applications testing, I also see the possibility of doing more accurate link speed tests with VPN’s and voice that a direct connection between lab routers just wont show you. Will let you know more as things progress.

7/19/10 – Got word from Apposite late today that they are shipping an eval unit to me. Should have it by the end of the week. Hope to have a review and an interview with the CEO of the company sometime in the couple of weeks.
